"ASTROFISICA NUCLEARE
Si occupa dello studio di reazioni nucleari di interesse astrofisico, che presentano una piccola sezione d'urto a causa delle temperature tipiche degli ambienti astrofisici. La Dott. Gulino si occupa in particolare dello studio di tali reazioni tramite un metodo indiretto chiamato Trojan Horse Method (THM), che consente di ricavare la sezione d?urto di una reazione nucleare a due corpi attraverso la misura di un?opportuna reazione a tre corpi. In questo ambito la Dott. Gulino ha partecipato alla realizzazione di alcuni esperimenti in diversi laboratori esteri (Cyclotron Institute, Texas A&M University, College Station, USA; Nuclear Physics Institute of Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague- Rez, Czech Republic; ATOMKI Institute of Nuclear Research, Debrecen, Hungary) ed in particolare è stata responsabile di due esperimenti realizzati entrambi presso i Laboratori Nazionali del Sud dell?INFN a Catania.
Attualmente si sta occupando dell'estenzione di tale metodo allo studio di reazioni indotte da neutroni.

BIOFISICA
La biofisica si prefigge di utilizzare concetti propri della fisica per spiegare il comportamento di sistemi biologici semplici o complessi.
In questo ambito, la Dott. Gulino si è occupata di due linee di ricerca:
1. interazioni di radiazioni ionizzanti e non ionizzanti con sistemi biologici
in particolare cellule eucariote, astrociti di ratto e umani, semi e piante
2. studio delle caratteristiche della luminescenza ritardata (Delayed Luminescence, DL) di sistemi biologici, cioe' dell'emissione ultradebole ritardata di luce nel range del visibile dopo stimolazione ottica. In particolare la DL e' stata messa in relazione con lo stato biologico del sistema sotto esame e si dimostra essere quindi un buon mezzo diagnostico. Possibili applicazioni della DL nell'ambito della medicina, dell'ambiente e dell'agricoltura sono in fase di studio. Recentemente, la DL e' stata utilizzata per lo studio delle strutture dell'acqua liquida in funzione della temperatura o dell'acqua utilizzata come solvente, e ulteriori studi sono in corso."
